Concussion Assessment and Rehab
- Acute assessment and management
- As a member of an ACC-funded Concussion Service Rehab Team (Advantage South Ltd and Active Rehab Group)
- Assessment and support for a persisting concussion
Your concussion needs to be diagnosed by a doctor in the Emergency Department, Urgent Doctors or your GP so that you are covered by ACC.
What is the criteria for diagnosing a concussion?
- A direct blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with an ‘impulsive’ force transmitted to the head
- Rapid onset but may evolve over a number of minutes to hours
- Resolution - sequential course. For some, symptoms may be prolonged
- No abnormality is seen on standard structural neuroimaging studies
(Berlin Statement. McCrory et al, 2017)
What is best management?
- Strict rest after injury is detrimental, graduated physical activity starting 24–48 hours after injury shortens recovery times
- Must tailor rehab to age, gender, job/role and symptom severity
- Considerations must be made for pre-existing conditions and history of trauma
(Pertab et al, 2018; 2025; Keatley et al, 2023)
